Theme of assignment: The remains of sunny days

The process

This section gives a brief overview of my work on the digital images of the theme.

I followed my digital workflow (developed in the assignment 1) to download, assess and select suitable images. All images were exposed well so there weren’t any rejects on technical grounds. All images were colour. I started working on black and white conversions at a later stage (see Image 2).

Image 2: Black and white conversions and selects as part of the main collection

At this stage, I started selecting images for my collection. I tried to make sure that the images ‘balance out’ against each other and convey all the messages that I wanted to communicate. I also wanted to keep some kind of connection running through the theme so needed different object to ‘talk’ to each other in some of the images (this is why I included the images where the roses share the frame with cabbages etc).

Image 3:  Black and white/ tones selection of images in Library /Grid View

As the above image demonstrate, I tried different tones, also high and low contrast black and white format. I noted that sepia tone would be very suitable for a quieter and gentler version of my theme (along the line of summer memories). However, being honest felt more important to me than being nice to my viewer, so I needed a stronger and somewhat less comfortable tone for my work.

Image 4: One of the selected images in Adobe Lightroom, Develop Mode

The above image was deliberately kept very light to maximise the appearance of the ‘fairy light’ effect on the roses and other flowers.

Image 5: final collection in Adobe Lightroom

I used my experience of working with Channel Mixer/ HSL/ Curves to manually adjust the tone of the image until I got it right. I thought that it was important to preserve the sense of lightness and light, so I maximised the value of highlights in some of the images [6 – 8] (checking on the highlight clipping warning light not to blow them out).  I decided to keep the roses ‘talking’ to the cabbages [2] and the poppies / mixed bouquet [6] to keep the images connected.

I used Adobe Photoshop to finalise the images and print them out.
