Project: Special processing

Selective processing and prominence

Finally, I looked at the post-production ways to redress the balance between people and place in my images.

There is only a slight variation in brightness between the Images 1 and 2 - just enough to make the juice seller more visible and to lit up the inside of the stall window. It is a very small and subtle change but it seems to add weight and rebalance the picture, for example, the figure in back seems somewhat less dominating.  I used the adjustment brush available in Adobe Lightroom to change the brightness.

The following two photos capture a boat-dweller on River Cam, shown against the passenger cruiser on the background.

The levels of brightness in Image 3 seem insufficient to let us observe what's happening inside the river craft cabin. Image 4 provides more insight as we are able to see the boat owner busy at work - painting a picture. Again, the adjustments were made in Adobe Lightroom and I used the shadows/ highlights levers as well as the adjustment brush.

Images 5 - 7 show a couple of people moving towards us through a lush green park on a sunny day. Image 5 is the original.

I darkened the figures to make them more like silhouettes, unrecognisable. I left the rest of the photo intact. In comparison to Image 7 where the figures are lighter, we pay more attention to the park rather than the people in this image.
