1. Old sewage pumping station, Cambridge 



Name: Old sewage pumping station in Cambridge
Characteristics: historic; permanent; medium size; with open access to public
Former functions: a sewage plant and a recycling facility, 1895 - 1968
Current use: Cambridge Museum of Technology
Main functions: preserve and demonstrate the technological processes that are not widely used any more; educational facility and a museum; a well-known landmark in Cambridge 
Main users: museum visitors: adult and school children; volunteers, staff some of whom operate the machinery
Why do people visit: to learn about the past and technology, to explore and have a day out with or without kids, nostalgia for old times.

2. 'The Tent' at Great Shelford feast 



Notes on the choice of place
I’ve chosen this place as an example of a temporary outdoor structure (and a type of a shed) used for entertainment.
Name: ‘The Tent’ is a large marquee erected every summer to host a weeklong local festival known as the Great Shelford Feast.
Characteristics: modern, temporary, medium size; with open access to public
Main functions: entertainment; protection from rain and wind; a place to rest, enjoy, ‘eat, drink and be merry’; fundraising for good causes  
Main users: visitors: adult and children; volunteers, artists

Why do people visit: eat, drink, enjoy and be merry.

3. The Tramshed, London 





Notes on the choice of place
I’ve chosen this place as an example of a former tram shed that is presently used as a restaurant and an art gallery.
Name: ‘Tramshed’, Rivington Street, London
Former functions: a tram shed or to be precise an electricity generating station for trams 
Characteristics: permanent, historic, medium size, accessible to public
Main functions: a posh London eatery serving chicken and beef dishes; art gallery downstairs; work of Damien Hurst in the main restaurant hall
Main users: residents and visitors of London

Why do people visit: eat, drink and people-watch; have an extravagant chicken dish whilst enjoying the D.Hurst art piece; visit art gallery in the cellar.

4. An aviation hangar

I’ve chosen this place as an example of a purpose-built aviation shed.
Name: A helicopter hangar at Bond Aviation Group, Norwich airport
Characteristics: modern, permanent, very large; restricted access – authorised staff only
Main functions: training for helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) aircrew members, storage and maintenance of helicopters, protection from weather elements.
Main users: aviation staff – pilots, medical staff, engineers and technicians; HEMS trainers, aircrew members and trainees.

Why do people visit: mainly work duties or training.

5. Fitzwilliam Museum

I’ve chosen this place as an example of a purpose-built museum that has retained its original function.
Name: Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge
Characteristics: historic, permanent, large; open access to public
Main functions: educational; acquisition, conservation, study and exhibition of a beautiful and ever growing art collection
Main users: visitors: adult and children; volunteers and staff; Cambridge University staff and researchers
Why do people visit: to learn about and enjoy art, to study or research it, to preserve it; to photograph it, to appreciate it; to rest after a day at work and take their mind of worries and problems; to educate themselves and their children; to inspire and extend themselves.
