People and Place: progress to date, reading and learning visits

People and Place, Assignment 3

Learning visit: Digital Revolution, July 2014

As part of my studies for the assignment 3 of People and Place I recently visited Barbican to see this exhibition.

Described as 'the most comprehensive presentation of digital creativity ever to be staged in the UK' (source:http://www.barbican.org.uk/digital-revolution/exhibition-and-events) the exhibition was a fascinating place to watch people interacting with technology and space.

It was interesting to notice that:
People had very different approaches to the space around them
Were attracted to different things
Had their own unique way to connect and explore what was around them.

I took some photos to capture some people during their moments of play and exploration.

Whilst preparing my coursework for the assignment 3 I came across many interesting photographic portfolios, which gave me inspiration:

Rus Blees Luxemburg http://www.rutbleesluxemburg.com

Simon Kennedy http://www.simonkennedy.net

Their work also demonstrates that the architectural photographers use different approaches to photographing  buildings and spaces.

February 2014: a quick update on progress with my course to date

Course work: I have just submitted a selection of prints and all my Assignment One materials to my tutor.

My current reading list:

Fil Hunter Light: Science and Magic - an excellent handbook on all aspects of light and lighting techniques. I will never put this book aside - it gives me so much inspiration!
Christopher Grey Master Lighting Guide for portrait photographers - this manual is quite useful as a reference book although some lighting set ups are quite complicated and some tips and advice might be of limited use as the book was written for American audience.
Roswell Angier Train Your Gaze - this is a thought provoking book which keeps challenging my practice and expanding my horizon as I am reading it.
Susan Bright Auto Focus: The self portrait in contemporary photography - this book has been a good source of ideas and learning for me.
Maria Short Context and narrative - I found this book really useful for completing my assignment. It is helping me to approach my work in a more structural way.
Anna Fox Behind the image - a very interesting analysis and many practical tips on how to research for a project, the use of scrapbooks etc.
David Strauss Between the eyes - this book has some very powerful messages, I am taking time to read it as I found I need some time and space to digest the ideas presented in this book.

Learning visits:

A photographic collection by Harry Callahan from his 1975 series 'Nature, Buildings and People.'

Aleksandra Mir

Miyako Ishiuchi
'This city was not real but created by my photography.'

Project Space: Inverted House. Tate Modern Exhibition
This is a collaborative exhibition between Tate and Museum of Contemprary Art in Belgrade featuring the work of Tina Grerovic and Sinisa Illic. Some themes and ideas I picked up from this exhibition:
- using a gallery space as a workshop/ work space/ creative space;
- creative art work in the art gallery/ exhibition room;
- using glass wall to expand the work/ space outside;
- collapsing and disintegrating vs being created and built;
- destroying vs building;
- inside and outside.
